Living in India for about 7 years was a transforming experience. India is an amazing country that rips off your ego if you let it happen! Changing my name and my language definitely helped! Coming to the USA after 7 years of freedom and lightness of being was... demanding! Adapting to a culture of doing was as much transforming as India was, just in a very different way! Traveling in Pakistan by myself was interesting... experiencing how muslim countries treat women. One night, a few days after I arrived there, a man knocked at my door... he said some words that made me think he is taking me for a prostitute... Up until then I was doing my best to look like the muslim women, wearing their traditional clothes. The day after that incident, I put my jeans back on with my little vest. I went in town and bought one of the hat men wears in that country. Looking like a man I was free again to be and go about how and where I wanted!
