Visiting SF-Palo Alto-Mountain View for immersion trip. Need suggestion on which area to stay and how to get around.

We are 5 male from Indonesia visiting Silicon Valley with agenda of learning the tech industry ecosystem. We are on a tight budget but we understand it is hard to host 5ppl. While we are there of course we also would like to go for a little sightseeing.

So we need suggestion on :

Which area we should stay and
How to get around (whether we need to rent a car or not)
What tech company available for visit

We will arrive at SFO around 9pm on 19th and go back on 25th also from SFO.

Oh, if anyone working for tech company we would love to set up a meeting to discuss more about our Indonesian tech industries. And of course we would love to have someone show us around if possible. We can offer souvenirs and gifts from Indonesia :)

Look up hotels on groupon or expedia. Downtown SJ is active on nights (Th-Sat).
The best thing would be to rent a car to get around because there isn't a lot of public transportation in the area. In San Jose you have the VTA, buses, and connecting train to SF, but not very feasible. Lyft and Uber are also popular in the area, but will become $$

Look for cheap motels if you're not looking for luxury, just sleeping over (it's actually mostly good in motels)
I'd say it depends how often you plan to move between places. Mountain View-SF roundtrip is 15$ with Caltrain = 15 * 5 (ppl) = 75$. Add some Ubers from station to your destination and it's add up. You can have a midsize car from rental place for a day somewhere between 50-100$ (probably 100$ as you can save mostly with having own insurance and company discount for example). So I'd recommend to rent a car on SFO for 7 days (cheaper rate usually). Don't worry about gas as it's cheap here. Also with car you're quite flexible and you save time (if possible avoid peak hours of traffic).
