It's a more interesting way to travel. Also, now I am travelling with my son, I think couchsurfing is an amazing way for him to learn about different people and different ways of life. So far I've only been a guest, but I hope one day I'll be able to host too. PS I know some people prefer to host those who have hosted other, not just travelled. Unfortunately I have never been able to do this, as since I have been a member, I have spent some time living in a small Polish town where I didn't get any couch requests, some time living in a flat in South Korea which was a single room, about 5 metres long and 4 metres wide, some time travelling, and some time living with my parents and unable to host. I hope to host in the future when I have my own place again. I have however 'hosted' in my car (my friend and I met a Greek guy on CS who was trying to get to the same festival as us, and he came on a roadtrip with me to get there)!
