I think Couchsurfing is the most simple way to visit a place and at the same time meet new people, and mostly people who really new the place.

I did a humanitarian trip in Mauritania at Dieuk. I met a lot of amazing people, and re-built a school in this little village. It was really amazing to give me the opportunity to do this kind of travel.
