Couchsurfing isn't about saving money. It gives you an opportunity to interact with the hosts who might be a localite or lived long enough to give you insights about the place, culture and history. If you are single traveler, it saves the boredom of staying alone at your hotel room. I have noticed that most of the hosts are avid travelers and it is pretty easy to become good friends with them.
