Based on my previous experience - Couchsurfing is the best way the get to know the area and the good people no matter where you go! I think it gets us, human beings, closer and it helps to breaks the walls between people from around the world.

Uma Coisa Incrível Que Já Fiz
I went 3 years ago to be A counselor at summer camp next to Manhattan for almost 3 months. After that I went with two other friend for a great road trip in the west coast area including national parks such as Yellostone and Yosemite.
