Today is "Indigenous Peoples Day" on my calendar.

(Only in USA I think)

And I don't believe I ever saw that before. It's also called Columbus Day. Some seriously horrible people came and ruined the place...

Home rules?

What are some rules you have in regards to prople visiting &/or staying in your home? Cleaning up after themselves is probably in every host’s rules for their guests, but what else?

i ask that guests remove their shoes inside and this a quiet building, so I also request they be quiet after 11pm Like most hosts I ask that my guest doesn’t briing other people here. (though one time that happened and the person my Couchsurfing guest brought to my home ended up being a better guest than the Couchsurfer guest 🤷🏻‍♀️) I request guests go out during the day because I like having my place to myself during the day. Vaping or smoking cannabis is ok, but they have to go outside to vape or smoke tobacco.

Miami 14 October To 21 October

Hey everyone! 👋 I'll be in Miami from 14 October to 21 October, traveling solo, and I'm looking to meet some fun people to enjoy the city with. I'm up for beaches, sightseeing, good food, events, nightlife, clubs, or just exploring Miami together.

I'm open to meeting people from anywhere — locals or travelers. If you'll be around during those dates and want to hang out or join some activities, feel free to message me. Let's make some great Miami memories

Good to know about friends request

In the old days (that is before the Nakba that occurred in May), when receiving friend requests, we could message the sender and ask why they were sending the request. It sometimes changed my mind and got some positive returns from this type of conversation.

Now, it's different, and you might be interested in knowing how it works:

1 - No interaction is allowed other than accepting or declining the request. You are blocked from requesting a chat with the other user as long as the request is pending.

2 - After you replied, then you can send a chat request like you normally do

3 - It seems like friend requests disappear after a few days.

We had much worse changes, but it's good to know how it works.

Did anyone ever "FlyDubai"?

I now read the 787? lost tail pieces on its dive over Saudi while the struggle in the cockpit went on. (supersonic)

Poll: Connected contacts

Support has not been responsive to my request regarding my personal contacts appearing under the "Connected contacts" section of the settings. In my profile, a few dozen people are listed under the "Users you know" subsection, with some showing links to their profile, and others showing invite link even though a few are Couchsurfing members. All these contacts' names start with the letter A, which indicates only the first in alphabetical order are displayed. This is odd and needs to be sorted out.

Could you please access this link to your settings: https://www.couchsurfing.com/c/users/settings/connected-contacts

And see what is displayed in your "connected contacts" subsection? Please mention whether you linked your Google account to your Couchsurfing account...

Thanks a lot.

AI: Is it better to be intelligent or well-informed?

I treat generative AI like an intern: I give it some context and ask it to write a professional email covering this, that, and the other thing.

Then I correct what it wrote, because interns, like AI, usually make mistakes (don't copy/paste!).

Unfortunately, there are colleagues who treat AI’s answers as if they were the gospel truth delivered by a God in a burning bush that isn't consumed by the flames.

Now, while advanced AI models have achieved estimated IQ scores between 120 and 135, theoretically placing them in the upper range or at a "genius" level...

Having a high IQ makes you quick to spot patterns, agile at deduction, and highly skilled at solving logic puzzles on bar napkins. OTOH, being well-informed you know who signed the Peace of Westphalia, you know the lethal doses of arsenic, and you’ve mastered macroeconomic trends.

So, are you trying to solve a novel problem or simply avoid saying something foolish in public?

Well, today a TV news program was discussing the trend of voters choosing right-wing governments, and showing how the global political map was shifting to the right. So I decided to ask two AI systems to generate a professional report on Latin American countries based on whether their governments are right-wing or left-wing, and they responded in under five seconds with an impeccable summary chart.

However, both made errors: one listed Chile as having a left-wing government under President Boric (which is correct: he is a leftist), but the president since March has actually been Kast (a right-winger). The other listed Colombia as having a left-wing government under President Petro (which is correct: he is a leftist), but the president of Colombia since August has been De La Espriella (a right-winger).

I pointed out the mistake to both of them, and they replied with something like "Oh, you're right; let me rephrase the chart correctly".

So, the next time you ask AI to recommend a cough syrup, think twice before following its advice.
