Any suggestions about hiking in Minneapolis?

Hello everyone, I am Stefana who just moved here 2 days ago and gonna stay for a while in Minneapolis. Now I am a freelance artist/photographer.

While I am in Europe there were so many nice hiking routes around cities, and I am wondering if there is some nice hiking routes here? My friend and I really want to ask about hiking routes here?One day routes around the city or a weekend short trip resorts not far which can go by car in 1-2 hours.

And for this season now, any special suggestions? And we also wanna know some local friends here who loves outdoor sports or outdoor photography activities.

Hi Stefana, Theodore Wirth Park is close to the downtown and has some decent hiking trails(1-2 hours). Afton state Park is a good place for a day hike. It's about an hour's drive from Minneapolis. For really great hiking head to Duluth, superior hiking trail along the shore of lake superior is one of the best hiking trails in US. cheers!

Afton and Wild River have nice hiking. Walking along the river road trails in MSP-STP is also nice. Lots of small county parks with lakes, hills, and woods. Not too much variety, though.

Pike Island, by Fort Snelling, is a good place to go.

It depends if you are wanting city landscapes.. or wilderness landscapes..

For city, there a thousands and thousands of bike paths around that can show you a how different type of angle to the city. google hennepin county bike map. We also have around 5-6,000 miles of tunnels in our metro area if you are into urban exploration. I usually walk by the Mississippi or around the lakes. I agree that Theodore Wirth is quiet and beautiful much of the year. Let us know what you discover.

Near the Mall of America is the Old Cedar Avenue. Follow it south to where it ends next to an old unused bridge and park in the lot there (or catch a bus at MOA to Old Cedar and Old Shakopee Road and walk south 1 km). There is an entry to fairly wild part of the backwaters of the Minnesota River. Check the trail out on google maps.

Stephana I'll be in Minnesota in about a week. I' m currently training to do the 65 mile Boundry Trail. http://www.borderroutetrail.org I'll probably hit most of the above mentioned trails if you would like to join me at any point. I'm willing to go slow and short as I carry my full backpacking trip weight.

A really great hike that is accessible from the light rail starts at Minnehaha Falls. There's a beautiful waterfall there with a with some fairly easy hiking along the creek down to the river but if you follow the river south it will be a fairly advanced trail that takes you to Fort Snelling. I would highly recommend hiking this with someone else as it is an remote area within the city. Another nice escape is Richfield, Mn (a first tear suburb). Head south on Lyndale to 70th street and there you'll find Wood Lake Nature Center. This is a great escape from a bustling city. It's has some nice wildlife viewing and some boardwalks too.

As for hiking...Duluth, granted, it's three hours away...A really nice park for trails though is Murphy-Hanrehan Park Reserve...Lebanon Hills (I know it's more renown for Mt. Biking), but I'm pretty sure you can do some fun hiking/walking...Both of those are perhaps 15 mins South from Mpls, maybe 20...obviously you can googlemaps. Id definitely recommend Theodore Worth (it's closer)...but if you get any sort of bike,nothing is better than hitting up Lake Calhoun, then on to Lake Harriet, and even Lake Nokomis if ya keep going...that whole are is great. Finally, just some freebies...Monday night is open-mic at Acme comedy club...it's free (and first timers who want to try standup can do so if they wish! balzy though lol....Komo zoo is free in St. Paul. Sculpture gardens, next to the Walker museum are free...walker on Thursday nights is always free thanks to Target Inc. Close to lake harriet is a "bird sanctuary" that's nice...granted, ya hardly see a damned bird, I didn't anyways...they also have a huge flower garden with hundreds of rare types...quite pretty.... Huge Improv theater is HILARIOUS and quite cheap...used to be free on one night, not sure if it still is?...some nights, looking at the site are $7...and it's well worth it... Other than that, French regional park is pretty cool...it's a HUGE park make of all ropes and nets you can climb and whatnot....hope that helps ;)
