300 euros per month should be enough for a decent room of your own in an apartment. A very generous meal at a restaurant can be had for 10 euros. A good bottle of white wine costs 3.5 euros.

You can try to find something in a website call idealista... i think that you can find something that you like.

I have a clearer idea of what I will need to earn now, so I can work from there.

If you want to be in Porto downtown you might have to compromise on space and modernity, to get something on a budget, but recently some appartments were renovated and you might be lucky to find one of those! The further you go away from the city centre, the cheaper and the bigger the appartments are. If you share an appartment with at least 2 friends, you might get to pay 150€ to 200€. Also notice that areas like Asprela (Paranhos), Campo Alegre and Palácio de Cristal, nearby faculties can be more expensive because of student demand for appartments in those areas.

Porto is an excellent choice to know Portugal. It is near Aveiro (45min by car, 1h by train), Coimbra (1h by car or by train) and the all the North part of the country. The tranports are excellent and it has the main stations to get any part of the country in a second.

The cost of living is not very expensive but you can do some things that will help you to save even more money.

Living in V.N.Gaia is the first thing you need to care about. Is very near from Porto and is beatiful as well. Check this 'imovirtual' website so you can find some apartments to rent.

The cost of living is in general low, so you can have an economic meal at lunch for 6€ in a restaurant orbuy ingredients to make yourself at home for 150/200€ maximum per month/person.
