Hello everyone! My name is Jan, and I was born and raised in Belgium with a rich blend of cultures: my father is Belgian, and my mother is from Niger. This background has fueled my curiosity about different perspectives and the world around me. I grew up in a rural area, which instilled in me a love for nature and animals. I still find peace in quiet natural settings and always appreciate moments away from the hustle and bustle. In my early teens, I moved to Ghent—my favourite city in Belgium—to study arts. I also happen to be a good drawer. Life took me on a different path for my bachelor’s, and I ended up in Maastricht, studying politics and philosophy. Now, I’m close to graduating and plan to pursue a master’s in political theory in the coming years. Recently I had the amazing opportunity to do an exchange in Hong Kong. After being here for one semester I realised how little I have seen of the world and I am eager to discover more, learn from different cultures and share experiences. I’m new to Couchsurfing but very excited for what is to come!

Hi there! I’ll be in Tokyo from mid-December until late January. It’s a bit of an unexpected situation as I was originally planning to stay with friends who live there, but their plans unfortunately changed. I’m now looking for a place to stay and, as I’m traveling on a budget, I’m hoping to avoid hotels or hostels for the whole trip. I recently had an amazing exchange semester in Hong Kong, and I’d planned to spend time in Japan before I graduate at the end of this year. It might be a while before I return to Asia, so I want to make the most of this opportunity. I fully understand the expectations of being hosted and promise to respect my host's space, time, and rules. Besides, I’m eager to become part of the Couchsurfing community. In the future, I’d be more than happy to return the favour, whether it’s hosting you or showing you around Belgium or the Netherlands! I hope you can help me out; I would greatly appreciate it. I am well-read and taught on many concepts and theories within politics and philosophy as it is part of my major and a general interest of mine (especially philosophy), of course, there is still much to learn. Within politics, I mainly focus on the foundational structures moving the world, ideologies and their histories, forms of governance, diverse economic models etc. Within philosophy, however, I have yet to reach the limit of my curiosity. Other than that I am a big science fiction enthusiast! Even though I am relatively new to the community, I love the intellectual engagement involved in the environment. Science fiction books (especially older ones) often carry a strong societal message that reflects the time and place of their publication and the author's personal views. It often goes unnoticed but understanding the history of science fiction reveals many (often niche) schools of thought of the last decades. This can, of course, be said about many creative subcultures like movies, video games, anime, etc. I also had a pretty interesting life so far.
