Best way to explore and to feel the atmosphere of the place that you travel to, is with someone who already lives there. Hostels can give you map and directions to the nearest restaurants, but local can give you much much more.
Music, Movies, and Books
Hard to say. Big fan of a good movie or TV Series, when a TV Series is good, I can watch it all in 1 day :D.
