The Pantanal is expensive, in general. You'll need to book a place to stay and transportation (the fazendas are sometimes deep inside the Pantanal).
If you are willing to rent a car (or find a local willing to join you on your trip) you can drive to the Estrada Parque, which is a state road that crosses a section of the Pantanal where lots of the fazendas are located. The good part about doing this is that you don't have to pay anything and you can see lots of wildlife on the sides of the road.
I have done it twice with my car and even saw a jaguar. I totally recommend doing it! But be sure to check if it is the wet season. If it is the road will be muddy and it's not advised to drive there in these conditions.
Other than that you can buy tour that leave from Campo Grande that includes food, a place to stay and transfer. I don't have the number of the guy I usually hook people up with right now, but could get that for you. You can stay in the Pantanal like this for around R$ 800.
I guess the contact Murilo was willing to give you is this one: https://www.visitpantanal.net
I believe this guy offers the cheapest tour you can get. I know two travellers who tried and recommended it. :)
Hi Julie! You need research the options before your travel and make packs. If you have a friend here, tell him/her to found the best options. Unfortenally people change thes prices for the foreigners. During the summer the prices are more higest. Try travel with a brazilian, or someone who speak portuguese. Hostels are more cheaper. Forget the resorts. while the food, we have diferent prices. Not always the cheapest is bad. Remember, here we love meat. If you are vegetarian, the price is different.
You can get a "carona", there is always people getting it on facebook or blabla car. Couchsurfing works Pretty well at Corumbá, where you are going to start pantanal, also the cheapest price that I have found for tours is one in Corumba called Bugio Pantanal Tours, they also have a hostel there.
I forgot, the bus that leaves at 6 pm is less expensive every day! Because of an agreement of the government. But arrives as 1 am.
Hi Julie ! I plan to travel through Mato Grosso do Sul on September. How was it for you ? Did you find cheap tours or else ?
