Reaching the base of the Great Cone of the Vesuvio, in one way or in another way is possible without climbing. The base of the cone is comfortably reachable by road. In any cases getting to the top of the mountain is not fast at all as you can imagine.
About reaching the very top of the Vesuvio....it's not allowed without a guide and less than that....officially....
It's officially closed at night, even if you won't find any fence to block you. And it's unsafe because the path goes often close to the crater's edge.
Don’t do it! The park is officially closed at night and it can be very dangerous to climb it at night. Many people have died because they fell into the crater. The path really closely borders the crater.
I still wouldn’t do it: the path is very sandy and it is easy to slip. And anyway if they catch you I think you could be in trouble. You could even have some unpleasant meetingswith boars.
Hm okay, I have a lot of mountain experience (climbing, mountaineering, alpinism) and have been to the mountains in the dark (with headlamp) many times. Do you still think its too dangerous?
thank you very much :) I know it's a just a hike and I don't mind hiking up with a headlamp. So is it illegal or just not recommended by night? I mean, would someone call the police if we go up or is it allright if we just take care? How is the view from up there? Is it a good place to see the firework in Napoli from above? Or where would you go for New Years?
I asked some people with more experience, and they think is not safe bc it might not have light. And also, it is private property, so probably not open or legal
