few hours in st kittis

hi guys, this time we are three young couples with three new born children (6-9 months), this is our travel blog: www.born2travel.it We are doing a cruise the last two weeks of march and we are going to stop one day, from the morning till the evening here.

Considering that this will be the first trip for our new born kids but we are experienced travelers and we wish we could sightsee something interesting of the island, may i kindly ask you which might be the things we can't miss or that you strongly suggest to visit or do?

I'm going to second Jeff's advice to take a trip down the peninsula. I really wouldn't miss it. A taxi will slow down at scenic points to allow sightseeing and/or picture taking, but with the amount of people you have, it would be more affordable and arguably more enjoyable to rent a vehicle or two. That way you can stop, get out, and enjoy the view to your liking.
Worthwhile stop on the way out - Salt Plage is one of the best restaurants on the island, albeit relatively upscale. Pay close attention for this very inconspicuous sign on the right. It's 4-5 km past Shipwreck. Stopping for a drink or two at "The Strip" would probably be well advised. The Strip is basically a stretch of 6-7 adjacent bars/restaurants on the Caribbean side down in Frigate Bay. They do cater to tourists, but it is iconic and unique enough that I would argue it's a "can't miss". You can buy drinks at one bar and walk up and down The Strip with them. There is no law in St Kitts about drinking alcohol in public (as well as no open container law, for that matter). There are no restaurants or bars at The Strip that are particularly noteworthy, but the fact that there are so many in one place makes it unique and interesting. In Basseterre, if you want to try some Kittitian/Caribbean food, then ask a friendly local for a good spot to grab some "cookup" (basically beans and rice and fish, chicken, ox tail, or pork) or saltfish johnnycakes. Saltfish is difficult to describe, but if I was forced to I would say it is something of a BBQ salted fish preparation. My favorite place to grab saltfish johnnycakes are from a local woman who sells them for a mere $8 ECD (I think) on the side of the park closest to port. Again, just ask a local for walking directions to the park. From what I have seen of Trip Advisor on the island, I don't think the information it provides is accurate, as most of the reviews are left by tourists who have been directed to the more touristy/popular places, so many of the gems/best kept secrets do not make the list.
