I'm coming for the 1st time in late September- I love hiking but I don't have a car - what's the best way to get around?

Where would you like to hike? If you're hiking near Boulder, since the city is relatively small, you can walk to trails or rent a B-cycle to ride to them.
To be totally honest, I have no idea! Do you have any advice as to where is good to go? I think I will be in Boulder the first week of October, so looking for hiking there too!
Lyft, Uber
Hey, I also will be available during your stay here in Denver. I wouldn't mind having you along for a hike. Let me know once you get here.
Awesome - I'll definitely drop you a line when I'm there!
It is rather difficult without a car but it could be done. You could get a regional bus pass and take the bus to several places in Jefferson County which has an extensive Open Space parks program. There are a lot of regional buses that go to the town of Evergreen where many of the parks are or even just hop over to a few places in the west Denver metropolitan area to cities like Lakewood, which has Green Mountain, or Golden, where you could easily access North and South Table Mesa, both of which are beautiful.
A lot of people think DENVER is a hiking/skiing/recreational mecca which is not the case. It's just the biggest city and the capitol. If you really want to get into the sticks it'll be at least an hour drive for hiking and two or more for skiing.
I didn't have a car for the longest time and got out by volunteering to build trails with Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado (voc.org) and carpooled with people to projects. It's quite rewarding and they feed you pretty well and have free beer for the overnight trips too! There's three projects going on the weekend you'll be in Denver and I'm going to the one in Del Norte if you'd like to carpool with and see a very beautiful southern part of the state in the San Louis valley.
Hey Jeanetta, thank you for this extensive advice, it is really fantastic. Coming from England, perhaps I underestimated how close things might actually be... I'm looking for places to stay in Lakewood and Evergreen and Boulder for the week after, so I can guarantee some great hiking! I am very interested in hearing about the voc program, and would definitely love to carpool with you to go along to that! Is it easier to direct message you? Sorry - I'm not that familiar with how everything works in the Couchsurfing world!
That's a common misconception, especially from Europeans. America is huge!
I'm pretty new to the CS world too but either way works for communicating. Here's a link to the event with details of the project and a link to register! http://www.voc.org/project/mike-obrien-memorial-project-stone-quarry-trail-construction-and-recreation-day
Hi Rob and Jeanetta: I had the same thought when I read about Denver and all those trails I was superexited not realizing that indeed in Europe things are mostly reachable by train....So I am really hoping to hook up with same fellow explorers to be able to see some beautiful sites. Maybe I can join you ?
Hello Everyone, I've been hoping to do some hiking but also found myself lost without a car...Would love to join you guys...would you mind if I tag along ?
Just in case anyone reads this....and was wondering....
If you're comfortable with it, and prepared, try hitchhiking! Colorado is the best state for hitching, ain't no doubt about it. I don't have a car and hitch to all sorts of hiking spots, even with my skis. Never have waited more than 25 minutes, average time is about 10 mins.
Can check http://hitchwiki.org/maps/ for some spots, or shoot me a message if you're looking for some pointers.
Peace & Love
If you aren't set on staying in the actual Denver area, look at some place like Rocky Mtn National Park. You can catch an airport van from DIA to Estes and there are plenty of buses that run all day into the park to the areas that have great trails.
