Suggestions on how to get from NY to Detroit
Hello! I have to go from NY city to Detroit and airplane tickets are out of my budget. Is there any train for this journey? Which bus companies are good and cheap? thanks!

Check out megabus
I would see if a airport to airport rental was availble. It's not long drive thru canada..
Greyhound bus is REALLY cheap if you book 2 weeks in advance online. If not, you can just walk in and buy a ticket and take the bus there. They also have free wifi in the terminal and on the bus. I recently had to bus hop and go from Pontiac Michigan to Detroit, then to Ohio. If you plan your route on the official Greyhound site they can give you an estimate price. There is a high chance it will be cheaper than flying. They also have discounts and promo codes they offer regularly. If you travel in the middle of the week (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) they also drop the price even lower.
You can also try the Amtrak train... but I've personally never used it before. Good luck!

Definitely an inexpensive method, but Spirit Air is almost always a very similar price with 2 weeks notice, unless it's a holiday week. Like within 10%. And, it's an hour flight, while Greyhound is almost 20 hours of sitting still and layovers. Unless you're visiting somewhat remote cities, or just want to travel the American countryside, Greyhound just isn't a viable, efficient transit method.
@ Peter Dalinowski Aye, but she said that flying was out of her budget, so I was making suggestions outside of flying. There may be other reasons why she doesn't want to fly.
Amtrak to Chicago then to Detroit is fairly cheap
I'm not expert, but Amtrak should go from NYC to Toledo, and you should be able to take train from Toledo to Detroit. Also, by train, it may be worth checking out Canadian Rail. NYC to Niagra Falls, into Canada, continuing to Windsor, Ontario, then across the river into Detroit. I have no idea regarding fares, but the US dollar is worth much more than the Canadian dollar (check exchange rate on Google, "$100 US in Canadian", it's today worth about $136 Canadian.)
Then there is always by bus, again, thru US or the same Canadian route MIGHT be cheaper.
Try spirit airlines. I've done it many times for under $50 one way.
Amtrak is almost never cheaper than Spirit, and takes an incredibly long time, meaning up to 20 hours, including layovers, because it travels the northern border of NY state. Plus the last stretch, from Toledo to Detroit, is via Greyhound, because there is no transit rail in MI south of Detroit.
Renting a car one way is generally wayyyyyyyyy more expensive than any other method, because there's a huge surcharge for dropping off in another state. Been forced to do it a few times when stuck during biz travels.
Greyhound all the way will test your humanity, and also isn't cheap.
Megabus is a long trip, requires you to really know their routes, because they won't schedule the connections for you, and you can easily miss your connecting bus if they're running late. Unlike other busses, they only have one or two leaving per day. If you miss it, you figure out where you're sleeping until morning. But, definitely the best bus option in the country.
Spirit is it. Probably around $75 direct flight. Only issue is transfers to LaGuardia, which most travelers to NYC are not staying near, and transfers from Detroit Metro Airport, which is pretty far from the city. Just those two things can double the effective price of your ticket. But, still, unless you're just roaming, it's Spirit all the way.
Try Hipmunk.com for airfare
Without more detail of where in NY you are it is hard to give sound advice
Every megabus bus sells the first seat on the bus for 1$ (must book like 2 months in advance), then theres like a few 5$ tickets, 10$ tickets etc as the seats start to sell. You can only buy it online. There's 2 pick up spots in Detroit, Wayne state (in front of the barnes and Noble) and Rosa Parks transit center. It's nicer than the greyhound. I've done it before, it's an exhausting ride.
