I realise that Borneo is a Muslim country, but where can you buy alcohol to take away - like a beer shop?

Sweetie, although we are a muslim country, alcohol is still rather easily available, only Muslims are prohibited to purchase. If you are in Kota Kinabalu you can get beer from the alcohol section of grocery stores. If you are looking for wine you could check out the grocer in Imago shopping mall, they have a wine section, or at Merdeka Supermarket there is a wine shop adjacent to it. In Wisma Merdeka there is a wine shop too. Liqour is not that cheap here, but if you could check out Labuan which ia duty free port and liqour is cheap there, however you can only take 1L of liqour out of the port (as in if you are goin from Kota Kinabalu to Labuan, you can only bring out 1l of liqour back to KK, but you can consume as much as you want there.) Most hotel lounges serve alcohol and cocktails. I am not the most learned person about alcohol but I hope that cleared some misconception up.
I just notied your location is Kalimantan....if it is then inout from someone closer to that area is needed, as Kalimantan is in Indonesia (although it is in the isle of borneo). However if you are in Sabah or Sarawak, which are the Borneo states part of Malaysia then my opinion stand valid.
Brunei on the otherhand I think does not sell any liqour I think.
Hope that helps.
Thanks lots for your help! I am coming from Kuwait which is a totally 'dry' muslim country, so just wasn't sure how things were over there, as someone posted on trip advisor that they couldn't get any wine. As I'm not drinking over here, I am rather interested in being able to get a beer or two over there, especially as it's a longish holiday including New Year. So your advice is very much appreciated :-) Thank you.
Which part of Borneo will you be going Elise? Sabah or Sarawak ( part of Malaysia) ? Kalimantan ( Indonesia)? Or Brunei?
Brunei is as dry as Kuwait..
Hahaha! There is something u don't know about Borneo then. You will be surprised with Borneo that you won't have any problem to get beer in local Chinese coffee shop, 3 for one set rm18??!😘 or any convenient shop like 7-11, orange or supermarket, beers are available! Malaysia is officially Islamic country but is beautiful & unique because of mixcultures. Hope u enjoy ur stays!
Ah sorry..are u in Kalimantan? We are talking about Sarawak & sabah. 😝
Thanks lots for your reply :-) As above, I had read a review on trip advisor about people saying they couldn't get any, which is why I was a bit wondering... (maybe they just weren't looking in the right places, hence my question) so now I can look forward to my trip with even more enthusiasm than before (which was already plenty, your country looks fabulous! Too many things to see and places to go even in 2.5 weeks.) Thanks for being a great CS to reply. Best wishes Elise
I didn't realize Borneo is a country ;)
Alcohol here is relatively expensive and limited in variety, but widely available.
Hey There, you can check out the Ten Ten store in Kampung Air, facing the seafood restoran and CIMB Bank. The alcohol there is quite cheap.
Indonesia makes it difficult and expensive, and most of Borneo is called Kalimantan and occupied by Indonesia.
In Malaysia, commercial alcohol is heavily taxed (I believe) and monopolized and consequently overpriced.
