How am I suppose to get to a service area from Tokyo?

I'm in Tokyo wanting to get to Kyoto, I looked online on how to do this by hitch hike (I was just gonna go out on the street and start asking people) and found out you need to get to the correct Service Area of the matching highway to your destination. This is where it kinda confused me, I read online about having to take some bus...can't I just start hitching in Tokyo city? .... Also I got a message from a creepy guy who had lots of bad reference from people, after I looked it really scared me, it shows there are many creeps in Japan, which further scared me off from this hitch hiking (I packed everything and even have the signs all ready), what if an attractive female gets stuck in a car in the rural area with a creep like that omg i am thinking what if he locks me in a basement for life that kind of story...
But I still really want to hitch hike, I've had this dream for a long time already!!!! Ahhhh !!!!
