Get the ADO airport bus from the airport to Playa del Carmen. After exiting Customs, look for the red & white ADO ticket counter before exiting the terminal. Buy a ticket to Playa, and then go outside to find the bus in the parking area. Another ADO ticket seller waits where the buses park. Buses run about every 30 to 60 minutes, and the fare is 216 pesos (the last time I checked). ADO has a website if you want to check schedules & fares.

The bus arrives at the ADO "Turistica" terminal in Playa. The ferry terminal is about 250 metres from the bus terminal, and an easy walk through the park. If you have heavy luggage, tricycle porters waiting outside the bus terminal can carry luggage for 50 pesos.

Ferries are running fairly frequently now. There are 2 services, Ultramar and Winjet, and both have websites if you need to check schedules & fares. Right now, they're operating on alternate days. Last ferry leaves around 10pm (that's from memory, so check the schedule if you need an exact time).

No need to book any tickets in advance.
