The nearest place would be the Peak District National Park in Derbyshire.
some nce walks closer to you - google clifton country park - it kind of spans quite a way towards bolton/kersley. crompton lodges at the end - also the area around Rivington in Bolon - moorlands etc

Yes the Peak District is a good option locally, lots of verdent, rolling hills, quite magnificent!
You can get the train to Macclesfield and tramp up into the hills from there, or get the bus from Macc to Buxton and jump off at the Cat and Fiddle, you're right up high there. Dunham Massey is a stately home with big lovely grounds and deer. There's also delemere forest in West Cheshire, which is huge and good for big walks.
Thank you all for your kind suggestions, I would not call the Peak district Manchester West, but it is certainly a magnificent place to be in the outdoors. I will check out the Clifton County park, which looks great on the map. and thank you John, I joint the Salford walkers, but will get in touch with the Lancashire ones as well, again this is great and please keep it coming. :-) Imke
It is really easy to get out of Manchester and quickly find great places to walk. There are local train services to many places. I recommend going out to Disley and visiting Lyme Park, going to Edale to experience a bit of the Pennine Way, going up to Hollingworth Lakes near Rochdale, Rivington Pike near Bolton, Wigan Flashes, Dunham Massey house and park near Altrincham, Tatton Park, over to the coast at Southport/Ainsdale/Formby near Liverpool. All very easily accessible from Manchester. If you have more time and want to go a bit further afield, there are good train connections into Yorkshire, Lancashire and Cumbria. I recommend Silverdale and Arnside, and the Cumbria Coastal Way path. Happy walking!
I've not read all the threads however the closest most beautiful walk is Chorlton Water Park you can get the bus near Maitland Avenue, walk all the way down to the end - it looks like a dead end however it is a car park, and then you have the lake. You can walk around the lake as well as get on to the River Mersey embankment and walk for miles - there is the Jacksons Boat Pub over a bridge and other fields and Sale Water Park to walk round too.
There is Heaton Park, Tatton Park & stately home, Dunham Massey deer park & stately home, some of the disused railways too.
Finally, there are big tracks of open land going outwards from Phillips and Prestwich forest park too!
