Please forgive my ignorance but I am wondering if it is safe to travel as a woman alone throughout India?
I'm planning on flying into Delhi, Agra, and would like to visit Chennai and maybe Goa, but not sure where else. My father is very concerned about me traveling alone lol. What is the local opinion and are there safer areas than others? Also is the currency situation a big obstacle to getting around? Thank you for any insight.

It depends upon, and been solo traveler is India is tough but it not been not also you cannot do alone in india, be aware about scam,at train station, with shop and taxi always bargain hard, but not in train ticket and buses fare you can ask discount on amount which they are charging extra.be smiling nit too much as say hi hello and always wear all covered cloths through out body.always see rating on hotel and also see guide book...and see about hotel price before you stay and be aware that they will charge extra..if any help you can drop me a mail
It is if you are cautious, and don't blindly trust people. If you plan it well, you'd be safe :)
It's safe, u can travel throughout India as a solo traveller, u just have to keep some things in mind like.
Respect local culture.
Don't go to temples wearing ur shoes.
Don't wear inappropriate clothes.
Don't go to poor lit areas at night.
Don't blindly trust anyone.
Rest most Indians are very warm hearted and respect tourists, as we say in hindi 'guests are like god'.
Dont mind if locals stare u a lot.

India is very big country and u will found different culture, different people at different places.. Not even in Indian but also in corner of world where u go first time ,, u shuld be aware about their culture, places, people, society and all to make yourself to be confidante to Trevel. Some cautions u must take at unknown places.. Do not talk unnessesary with unknown people.. U may found different kind of personality people.. Everybody is not bad person.. Be yourself positive while travelling. It's also depends on you how you behave itch people. India is most popular country for travellers.. Regarding currency, now situation is under control. U will not found difficulty nowadays, but please carry your credit / debit cards also. Use digital or online payment as much as u can do. Do not care people who stare u or want to make unnesserly contact with you, for your safety, u just avoid them. All the best.
And you see, already you have offer to be driven. I believe after posting you've received offers by some via CS-mail too.
No it is absolutely not a good idea for a girl to travel alone in India. Get a company in any case. Even there are parts that are quite safer (Delhi is definitely the most dangerous), you should not forget about basic preconditions. Mind that relationship men-women is of Middle Ages. Cover yourself, still boys will stare. And plz stay away also from single-men couchsurfers without tons of reference. Have in mind that staying alone in room with a man you don't really know is already a risk.
It is as safe as any other place - New York, San Francisco, etc. Things happen everywhere; India is just as safe as anywhere else. I am not trying to scare you, but just defend India. I feel hurt. Indians are super helpful and super courteous, except a few. Wherever you go make new friends, enjoy your stay and love our variety of culture, and most important be awesomeness. Any trouble call - 100 (police), 101(Ambulance), 102(Fire Brigade). If you are dropping by Delhi or around, you can ping me. "Atithi Devo Bhava" - Guest is God.
No one replied about money being a problem ... but if you can postpone your trip for a month or later it would be little more easy for you, as nowadays money is big problem in here.
Nope, never travel alone in India.. Always try to have a company with you whether you will be in metropolitan city or in villages especially for women. It's better be safe than regretting in the future.
