I like Moovit.
Citymapper has been recommended to me as well
Citymapper tells you where on the subway, front, middle, or back, to be closest to your destination, which can be amazing. I would double-check above-ground walking directions with Google Maps, though, because a few times it's given me very wrong directions to less-frequented destinations.
google maps
To you and everyone recommending Google Maps: I live in Buenos Aires and Google Maps does not work that good. Lots of sub lines and trains are missing, as well as most of the bus lines. Thank you all for letting me know it works good on NYC.
Hi Emilse,
The ONLY service which offers completely up to date service change info is the MTA's Trip Planner. I recommend accessing it through your browser. There is an app for it, but as far as I can tell, the app is pretty pointless.
It is a bit bulky to use, which is why many still choose to use City Mapper, Transit, and Google Maps. These other services will typically work fine. However Trip Planner is run by the MTA, and is the only completely accurate source of info. I use it especially for long weekend trips. Note that you need to enter in exact addresses. Otherwise, you can type in nearby landmarks or subway stops and hope Trip Planner will recognize the location.
Hope this helps.

Transit also offers service change updates. ;)
Google Maps is actually super helpful in NY, it tells you up to date public transportation directions and when the next bus or train is coming!
GOOGLE MAPS YES..ALSO I'VE SEEN FEW KIOSK OF SOME SORT THROUGH OUT THE CITY ..TELLS U TRAVEL INF ..ETC
I just use google maps!
I'm with the majority: Google maps is the way to go.
I think google maps bought hopstop
Keep it simple and use Google maps, but don't forget to ask for help! New Yorkers are actually very helpful, so have a concise question ready and they'll be sure to come up with an answer.
Hi I actually reviewed several apps for the travel blog I write for check it out! Most of the apps are free

Google maps is excellent! You can select public transit directions and they will tell you exactly how to get someplace by subway and bus (they can't do this for all cities, but it works excellently for NYC).
Also, if you're at a bus stop, bustime.mta.info is a great way to find out in real-time when the next buses are arriving!
