I am wondering how realistic it would be to camp in Central Park.

I'm pretty liberal, but it's not advisable. You'd have to be in a really remote place, and any really remote place would be way too sketchy. The police mayyy ticket you but they'd probably just tell you you can't do this and think you're dumb for trying. You might try something like Gantry State Park, I don't think they have police doing rounds there and it's pretty safe.

any park in nyc is not recommended for camping. if you really want to camp, just take the metro north upstate.
I think only homeless people or people dealing with shady business go out super late in parks or other not so lit places. It doesn't seem like they're a huge danger sign (when was the last time anyone heard of people getting assaulted from folks like this in a park?) but i could be wrong. Years ago I used to smoke in central park at night and one time there were these figures that came out of nowhere. They were probably there to sleep or smoke too but in anycase we left without any trouble.
Not a good idea. Not legal and not safe.
Wear lots of camo and hide in the trees.
