There are no need for lockers. When you go snorkeling you're not disappearing into the deep :) You'll have a visual of your belongings at all times. Everything there is wanting to have as much fun as you, they're not out to steal. The locals are great, it's a small community and no worries on theft. When you get off the ferry, there are several rental locations right there at the pier. You can rent there and go to Lover's Cove to snorkel or walk over to Descano Beach and rent there. A little more expensive but still great. I would suggest you go to the one on the pier, get the price know the location and then walk over to Descanso. You'll be able to compare the two with their respective locations.

The island is all about leisure so it's food reflects that. So it all depends on how much you want to spend from $15 for a simple burger and fries at Coney Island West. A cubano sandwich at Cafe Metropole or go to the Blue Water Grill and eat facing the ocean. You can also go to Vons grocery store and just grab a $10 sandwich. Avalon is meant for you to walk around and stop off where you feel comfortable. Don't let it overwhelm you too much, every place to eat is on the boardwalk.

The whole city is a mile and a half so walking from one end to the other is a simple 15 minute walk and very enjoyable as your walk is right along the coast.

I do prefer lockers, though: even among happy ,visitors there are those with sticky fingers. I have had a phone, towel, and yes- my shorts! stolen and when snorkelling, I don't pay attention to anything but the water and what is under and in it :)
