Hi Ilse, I wanted to at least write a couple of lines for you, but I'm sorry to say there is not much in the way of hostels near Palo Alto. There is Hidden Villa which is in Los Altos Hills, but note they are only open "through May", then close for the summer. And we are at the end of May here really. http://www.hiddenvilla.org/rentals/hostel In SF there are a few hostels, but it'n not exactly close-by. One can take Caltrain from SF to Palo Alto (or take BART from SF to Millbrae, then switch to Caltrain at the Millbrae station and take caltrain from Millbrae to Palo Alto.)

EDITED TO ADD: You can also check on airbnb. I just searched in Palo Alto for places for $25 or less, and there are 4 places that are either $20 or $25 a night.

Did you try Airbnb? They are often cheaper than the hostels. If you have a car I might recommend that you stay here on the Coast. There are two great hostels. One in Montara and one at the Pigeon Point Lighthouse. Both are about 45 minutes from PA. I'm sure there is a closer one if that's what you wish.

I did a little research. amazingly it doesn't appear that there are any Hostels in the entire San Jose region. The closest ones are the ones mentioned above plus Santa Cruz...another viable option. All about 45 minutes to an hour from PA.

I second this you won't find much cheaper than AirBNB people will rent out their rooms or there will be rooms in a "hackerhouse" - multiple people living in the same house with few bunkbeds in each room.

Airbnb - check out Radio Eden in Mountain View, which is kind of like a hostel

How many days you are staying. You could commute in a train from almost any where in Bay Area. I might be of some help if you want to stay in San Jose area.
