Hello Sacramentians! Me and my sister, both Lithuanians, are planning to spend in Sacramento from 9-12th of September. We both arrived to the USA with Work and Travel USA program and our flight leaves from Sacramento international airport on the 12th of September.
During these 3 days we want to explore the city and go shopping to Ross, Tj and Marshalls and other shopping centers. So, my question is how to commute in the city? What is the best place to stay with shuttle to the airport on the 12th of September early morning?
Are there any places must to go/to see/ to eat at? Could you also tell us the places/districts which are better to avoid?

Hi, the public transportation isn't as extensive as other cities but you can definitely get a bus from the airport into Midtown Sacramento (but it will take awhile). If you would like someone to drive you and your sister around to Ross (there is one close to me in Arden), Nordstrom Rack, or Arden Fair Mall (a very big shopping center), you can send me a message.

Stay away from: West Sacramento, North Highlands, Oak Park, South Sacramento. Hotels in Natomas are nice and it is in between Downtown and the airport and there are Ross and TJ and every other retail chain there. Midtown and Downtown Sacramento also have safe hotels but they are expensive. Midtown has great restaurants and and bars. If you like hiking, I go hiking up my area and Auburn and Forest Hill. Beautiful places. They are about 35 mins up highway 80 from Downtown. Apple Hill is going to be the big event going on while you are here and is really fun. It's 40 mins or so from Downtown

Sac Youth Hostel in downtown is nice. I'd use light rail and Lyft/Uber to get around. You might look into renting a bike too if you end up downtown...not so much Natomas (which does have clean & safe hotels). If you like music, this is going on Sat - http://cityoftrees.com/ I enjoyed attending a music festival when I was in Belgium...fun way to experience locals having fun. It might unfortunately be a bit bro-heavy fyi - lol - but mostly a lot of good music & happy Sacramentans if that sounds like your cup of tea. :) Enjoy your visit!

If you decide to stay in Downtown or Midtown, you can take Yolobus routes 42A or 42B for 2 dollars each way. Go to yolobus.com/news/airportservice.php to see if it fits your needs.

Don't miss Roseville if you're looking to shop. The Roseville Galleria is the 2nd largest mall in Northern California (largest is in San Jose). Across the street from the Galleria, there is another shopping center (Creekside Town Center) with Marshalls, Nordstrom Rack, Old Navy, etc. Across the other street, there is the Fountains Shopping Center that has other stores as well. There are also a bunch of restaurants in this area. You can try Jack's Urban Eats at the Fountains for some Northern California Farm-to-Fork food.

I will echo Rob's comment. Also I live in the Natomas neighborhood which is 10 minutes from the airport and has a Ross and Marshalls a mile or so apart on a busy street with regular shuttles for just North Natomas and buses straight to downtown. FYI my housemate speaks fluent Spanish and is off every other Friday and loves hosting people so he may be amenable to it if you want. Our other roommate will be moved out by then so you could have a bedroom to yourself. My girlfriend and I are also organizing a river rafting trip that weekend, so we could probably also give you a proper introduction to the NorCal outdoors:) Just message me if you'd like to chat about it.

Look up the Super Shuttle service for the Sacramento area. I think it's http://www.supershuttle.com/locations/sacramentosmf

They give reasonably priced rides and exist solely to take people to and from the airport.

I have lived much of my life in Sacramento. It is a great place to live, but not much to see for tourists. I suggest going to Lake Tahoe or the Sierras. There is some history in the foothills, but not as much as in most areas.

Welcome! I know there is a hostel in Sacramento that may be your most cost effective option. You can also check airbnb.com to see if anyone is willing to rent out there room. I'm currently dog sitting at my friends house until the 15th and have a vacant room in midtown available (19th and H).

As far as things to do, Second Saturday is tomorrow. Which means lots of art galleries in the midtown area open up for free and there is a lot of live music. You picked a really great time to visit.

As far as transportations I would say light rail, Uber, Lyft, or bus will be your main options. Enjoy your time here and if you would like to take me up on the room offer.

Sacramento is a safe city the only draw back is the homaless but that is everywhere the RT is pretty good google RT sacramento I live in a flat in north sacramento U R welcome to the floor but it is HARD call me @ 9166622539 my typing is poor
