San Felipe - San Luis Gonzaga Bay

Hola gente de San Felipe,

This winter I am planning to explore the Baja peninsula. I heard of the San Luis Gonzaga Bay, south of San Felipe. Does anyone know if the road to there is paved and suitable to drive? I've tried to google it and it looks like they were at least busy working on it, but I am not sure how the condition of the road currently is. Also, going south from the bay towards the peninsula highway number 1, how is that road?

Hi there!

I crossed all the Baja peninsula over the road #1 and it's excellent, there exist some exceptions at San Quintin, the road is under repair. However, it's a wonderful trip.

Nice adventure!

Highway 1 is on the other side of the peninsula. Gonzaga is 100 miles south of San Felipe on highway 5. The road is now paved all the way to the bay. To continue past Gonzaga will mean driving off road, sort of...for an additional 40+ miles to the connection with Highway 1 the road is dirt and washboard, but very drivable...just drive slowly and you might consider letting some of the air out of your tires to make them less prone to puncture...once you get the onto Highway south, you will either have a gas station at Punta Prieta, a little ways past the Bay of LA turnoff...or continue a little further (80 miles) to Jose Maria, a small town just before Guerrero Negro, where you can find gas, food, lodging and everything else you might need.
