A quick primer on areas of town: -The "hip" areas are downtown, sugarhouse, marmalade, 9th & 9th, and the avenues. -If you want to be closer to the mountains, look for places in Foothill, Millcreek, Holladay, Cottonwood Heights, or some areas of Sandy. -Cheaper areas would be Murray, Midvale, South Salt Lake, and some areas of Sandy (on the other side of town from the mountains). -You might be able to find some good deals in neighborhoods like Rose Park, Glendale, North Temple, and Liberty Park. Those areas have historically had a lot of crime but are currently gentrifying, so you might find something good. -West Jordan, West Valley, Herriman, Magna, Kearns, Daybreak, most of Taylorsville, and most of Riverton are all quite a ways from, well, anything good, so I recommend avoiding if you don't want to have to drive far to do stuff or see people. -The Pioneer Park/Gateway area of downtown is overrun with drug addicts and homeless people right now. Avoid.
