What are the best music venues in DC?
So, DC has a rich musical heritage. I have loved Bad Brains, Figazi, Minor Threat, etc., since I was in my late teens.
But I love all kinds of live music, and would love to come and see some of the smaller venues when I am in town in November this year. Where should I go??

The Black Cat is an awesome video if you are a big fan of Fugazi, Minor Threat, Dismemberment Plan etc. Rock and Roll Hotel and DC9 are smaller venues that also play indie type stuff. 9:30 Club is the biggest and most famous venue in DC but they have more mainstream type stuff. U Street Music hall is mostly electronic music. You might be able to find like smaller house shows which definitely still exist in DC. Hope this helps!
They'll probably have more mainstream types of music but the Hamilton, Howard theatre, Lincoln Theatre, EchoStage, and 6th and I historic synagogue are a few more to check out. Merriweather Post pavilion is the main outdoor venue but it's outside the city a ways.
Oh, and the Birchmere in Alexandria
Check out Labor Day Weekend Music Festival at historic Lincoln Theater in DC. Sep 2 - 4, 2016. www.202creates.com
the line up of performers for this particular concert is varied eclectic and really good
Everyone should go to the Kenedy center at least once. If you can get out of the city, Old Town Alexandria has some street performers. In the summer , Fairfax county parks hosts free concerts. In DC proper, for jazz Sotto is a nice intimate venue.
the kennedy center has a venue called milleneum stage which has daily free concerts daily at 6 pm. the acts are many different styles
In the Adams Morgans, you can find a whole lot of live music: Bukom Cafe - reggae every night Bossa - salsa & Latin grooves Rumba Cafe - salsa on the weekends Columbia Station - jazz every night Madams Organ - rotation of Blues & other groups posted on their website (charges cover fee later at night)

9:30 club
Gypsy Sally's is a hidden spot in Georgetown but one of the bests and not too crowded. Eighteenth Street Lounge in DuPont also has live bands on the third floor Friday nights which are fun, in addition to their regular stream of live reggae Wednesday nights and Salsa Thursday nights.
There is an app called DC Music Live that will tell you about all the music events happening on a particular date!
