I've been a part of the CS community for a long time. Some amazing experiences and generous people along the way. It is important to remind ourselves that CS is not like a free stay or a hotel or Air BnB... you do it to meet people and have authentic experiences, and yes also save money of course. Remember to be nice to your hosts that let you in their house, show them you care, write a nice request... these are important details. I like to think I'm very easy going, friendly and helpful, and have incredibly high tolerance for nonsense. I have lots of interests - travel, playing music, cooking, outdoors, farming, building things, learning languages, photography, reading history, blah blah... so we'll get along easily. If you are a social progressive, liberal minded, gay friendly, open to new ideas, and pushing your comfort zone, you get fifty bonus points. On a quest to cycle more - it's such a relaxed way of seeing villages and cities. I also use the Warm Showers platform a lot (it's like CS for cyclists). Nomadic software engineer, like to travel, explore, taking the roads less travelled.
On a career break here of sorts so around more than usual. I grew up on a small island, travelled a lot, studied a lot, was 3 years in Canadian forces, studied overseas, worked as an immigration advisor, on some film projects, building ice climbing towers, instructed rock climbing. Current projects are building and enhancing on my property here in Yukon - setting up blacksmith shop and planning for future house, sauna, bunkhouse, greenhouse... so many projects! My main hobby is still climbing -rock or ice but sometime boats hikes and camping ar involved.
