I see couchsurfing as a much-needed network that simply connects people who might not otherwise cross paths. I've been lucky to have met some amazing people and had some really valuable exchanges, so I hope to keep that up! Unfortunately I've only rarely been able to host because I've been lacking a real space of my own, but as I exchange hospitalities with others surfing I look forward to the time I have more of an ability to host in my own place.
