It's always better to meet locals. I love hostels too but most of the time you just meet other backpackers. And honestly sometimes places are very expensive (like Norway for example) and it's impossible to afford visiting and paying for accommodation. Couch surfing helped me to meet great people there and afford visiting and hiking. I'm on workaway too, it's nice to work for accommodation and be part of a family for a little while!
