I made several hitch hiking trips in Poland, Germany, and Norway. I also travelled in Norway without spending a Euro- backpacked, hitch hiked, tented and drank soup packed from Poland. :) Well, I finished my PhD in Michigan- that may be the second best thing I have done- haha
