Hey, I'm Kanato! 👋 I work at an EdTech company in Japan and travel whenever I get the chance. I got into Couchsurfing during a trip to Switzerland — and what hooked me wasn't the free place to stay. It was the conversations. Hearing how locals actually live, what they care about, where they love to eat — and listening to other travelers talk about their own journeys. That's honestly my favorite part of travel, and Couchsurfing is where I find it most. If you feel the same way — if you're curious about Japan and want to talk with someone who actually lives here, not just visit it — let's grab a drink. I'm based in Tokyo and happy to meet up. Movies: One of my favorite movies is Yes Man. It’s a film that inspires positivity and encourages me to embrace life’s opportunities without hesitation. Books: Bushido: The Soul of Japan. It’s a fascinating exploration of the moral principles that have shaped Japanese culture, and I’m reading it as a way to deepen my understanding of my own heritage.

One Amazing Thing I've Done

I spent Día de los Muertos in Mexico with a host family who took me in like I was one of their own. We went to the cemetery together — which sounds solemn, but wasn't. There were comedians performing, musicians playing, families eating and laughing around the graves of their loved ones. The whole idea is that the dead come back during this time, and you celebrate in a way that would make them happy. In Japan, we have our own traditions around honoring ancestors — but this was something else entirely. Loud, warm, full of life. The kind of cultural moment that you can't really prepare for, you just have to be there. I want to go back. Mexico surprised me in the best possible way, and that host family is a big reason why.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach basic Japanese phrases, share my favorite cooking recipes, and discuss the Japanese education system. I’m also eager to learn about your culture, especially family dynamics, moral education, and the ways in which different cultures honor their ancestors. Sharing stories and experiences is something I truly enjoy, and I look forward to exchanging knowledge and insights with you.

What I Can Share With Hosts

I’m willing to help out in any way I can during my stay. Whether it’s assisting with household chores, preparing meals, or watering plants, I’m happy to contribute. I’m also open to participating in local activities, sharing stories, and bringing a bit of Japanese culture to your home. I believe in being a respectful and considerate guest, and I’m always eager to make the experience enjoyable for both my host and myself.
