About Me

Write. Enjoy Melbourne. Pay the rent.

5'9", brown hair, blue eyes, fair skin (I haven't turned to dust in sunlight yet but why take the risk?), glasses (since I was 10 and I still maintain I look more... complete when I'm wearing them!).

I am by nature a pessimist, by choice (usually) an optimist, a Christian of 22 years' experience (partly my choice).

We make our own choices. If we're lucky, we get to understand the choices we make - their consequences, the pressures we were under when we made them, what influenced our decision.

I'm a Christian and I believe that God loves his creation and shows us how to relate to him properly in the Bible. I became a Christian because at the time I thought it was the only sane choice in a smorgasbord of what appeared from where I stood to be insane choices. It remains so today, for me. I take great comfort in knowing that being a Christian doesn't give me a checklist of thing to do in order to go to heaven - if anything, it shows how I can live a life that says "thank you" to God for letting me into heaven.

Why I'm on Couchsurfing

I haven't yet, not really. I had a bit of a hairy time on my last visit to Portland, OR and while I slept on a couch ONE night, it was arranged through acquaintances and not CS. The responses to my cry for help, however late, were super encouraging and I'm hoping my next trip (for 6 weeks from the end of February) I'll be able to meet some Surfers!

While not couchsurfing in a CS2 Projecty way, one visit to Sydney involved me coming up short on a place to stay one night and crashing at my old abode... on the couch. Very comfy, I might add...

Besides chocolate?

I enjoy Monty Python and the ridiculous; chocolate; games like Canasta, Scrabble, Zombies!!!, Settlers of Catan; chocolate; travelling by public transport; chocolate; reading; chocolate; movies, on the big screen, VHS or DVD... and coffee.

Music, Movies & Books

The best movie ever is THE PRINCESS BRIDE. Always my number one movie. The rest of my top 10 changes. Ask me again next week.

My favourite band is Concrete Blonde. I also love the music of the 80s and early 90s. I am not ashamed of this, even though I know that conventional wisdom (oh *so* reliable as it is) would have me be so.

My favourite book would be NEUROMANCER by William Gibson. He used a typewriter to write a book that envisaged the future we live in today, more or less; coined "the matrix" before Keanu Reeves had a career; and inspired me to write. I'm also a huge fan of Terry Pratchett books. The man deserves an OBE!

One Amazing Thing I've Done

I have been a part of training young Christian leaders for over ten years through several ongoing camping ministries and seen them grow into strong, faithful leaders themselves, despite all the mistakes I've feared I might have made along the way! (I think that's pretty amazing!)

Teach, Learn, Share

I can tell you the good news about Jesus (and no, he wasn't behind the sofa the whole time!). I can fold a paper crane. I can teach you to play Canasta. I can probably tell you (or find out for you) anything you might want to know about Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. (Is this the kind of thing I should put in here?)
