To be 100% honest when I first heard about Couchsurfing, coincidentally I was about to go on a trip and I thought signing up would actually save me money as I was on a really tight budget. Though I didn't know much about the community, I decided to give it a try. I looked for hosts in the city where I was going but had no luck: unfortunately no one agreed to host me. . til one day a host replied to my message saying I needed some experience before I could look for hosts, which meant I needed to host a little, meet new people, establish connections, write and be written references and so on. .and then finding a host would be easier. Well, I took his advice and guess what, I fell in love with Couchsurfing! I started hosting and I enjoyed it so much that I often got carried away and wanted to host new people all the time. I had the opportunity to meet so many people from all over the world, and the cultural exchange is just great. It is definitely not a substitute for hotels: it's a way to make new friends, to help people, to exchange experiences, to teach and to learn. At a hotel none of this would be possible! You get to know people from so many parts of the world that it feels like they bring a piece of their country as they walk in - it's as if I got to travel without leaving my city! I'm really happy I joined this community and I hope I can keep hosting/being hosted.
