To save cash. Also while traveling abroad I stayed a hostel for the first time. I fell in love will it! And more so the social aspect of it. In a hotel you may or may not meet a single person. With hostel and what I assume with couchsurfing you have an instant connection to the location of your visitation with the individual in the area.

After my divorce and my teenage sons decided to move with dad. I went on my own Eat,Pray,Love, Pilgrimage moment. I walked from the east of Spain to the West of Spain on the Camino de Santiago. If you can I recommend it!
