About Me

Insta: @awholeoldworld

“Here is us, on the raggedy edge. Don’t push me, and I won’t push you. Dong le ma?” – Capt. Malcolm Reynolds ⚓️

WHO AM I?
British Canadian Explorer and random adventurer. Lucky enough to be born into a decent family and then made some good financial decisions in my early 20s, therefore spent the last couple of decades going around the world and creating business projects, small businesses and handing them over to people to create jobs and new ideas, to keep myself interested!

CURRENT PROJECT: THE SICILIAN CONNECTION

Currently looking at setting up a mosaic art gallery and Vintage fashion shop in Sicily, Italy. Bought myself a run down apartment overlooking the sea, to have as a possible winter base. and sailing HQ.

Open to collaboration. Just message me!

Cut & paste requests are fine—just add a small note to show you’ve actually read my profile!

ABOUT ME
Slightly eccentric, filter-free, & 100% honest 😆. I’ve been hosting & surfing for 10+ years with stellar reviews. Politeness is a must—disrespectful guests will be shown the door 🚪.

LIKES

Polite people 🫶: Those who are on time, keep their word, admit mistakes, and show humility.
Good food 🍲: Fresh, simple ingredients made with love and creativity.
Antique hunting 🏺: Exploring car boot sales, bazaars, and finding treasures with history, so I can clutter up my house like some kind of gandalf based hermit when I get older!
Laughter 😂: Life’s better when we don’t take it too seriously—laughing is essential.
Singing 80s songs 🎤: mostly out the window of my car at a poor unsuspecting victim, 80s hits are the best.

DISLIKES

Impolite people 🚫: Disrespect or wasting my time will end our vibe fast.
Phone addicts 📱: Living through screens instead of the actual experience.
One-uppers 🙄: Everything isn’t a contest—learn to enjoy without competing.
‘Open-minded’ but actually close-minded people 🤔: Don’t pretend to be what you’re not.
Sheep 🐑: Blindly following the crowd instead of thinking critically.
Onions 😩: The bane of my existence— sadly allergic, but I can create great dishes including them!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I’m on Couchsurfing because I’m done with the ordinary. I’m not here for tourist traps or cookie-cutter experiences. I’m here to meet real people, get into raw adventures, and find the hidden gems most travelers miss. Couchsurfing is where I connect with folks who are looking for something deeper than just a bed to crash in. 🌍

I first joined Couchsurfing in 2012 when I needed a place to stay in a tiny town in New Brunswick, Canada—no hotels anywhere 😬. After a quick Google search for “stay in Smallsville,” I found exactly one Couchsurfing profile. I reached out, they said yes, and that was my first taste of what Couchsurfing was all about. I was hooked. 🌍✨

When I got back to my own Canadian smallville, I opened my doors to travelers, eager to pay it forward 🏡. Later, I found myself in Berlin, where Couchsurfing became more than just a place to crash. It was a gateway to meeting fascinating people who challenged my worldview 🤯. I even hosted as “the mobile couch” in my camper 🚐 for a while, joining countless meetups along the way.

In Prague, I had a more stable home for a time 🏙️ and decided to host more regularly, giving back to the community that had welcomed me for years 🤝. Since then, I’ve hosted and surfed across the globe 🌏—whether in war zones like Iraq and Ukraine ⚔️ or cruising through places like Germany, the Netherlands, and Bulgaria 🇩🇪🇳🇱🇧🇬.

Interests

Archaeology, especially in the field of 'unexplained discoveries' and discussing potential undiscovered locations. If you are the type to go treasure hunting then we will have great talks.

Marine Archaeology and diving: as above but more onus on getting wet.

Ancient Mysteries: If you are interested in the questions such as 'where are we from?' and the like, but without lizards, then I am sure discussions will be entertaining.

Photography: I am a budding photographer and would love to take tips from any photographer, especially if you come bearing a full frame camera!

Magic: If you are a magi I want to learn.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

When the darkness settled, peering into the darkness and seeing the creature peering back at me, eagerly guarding the tomb of his master. What happened next was something I will never forget. I will tell you more upon our encounter.

(Finally someone asked me about this tale- sorry for the nightmares Marietta!)

As that's not something I technically did....I delivered a baby once. As that wouldn't impress a midwife I led 120 men into battle against exploding tanks armed with nothing but a stick. If you consider that more crazy than amazing then I once raised a baby pigeon I found on the floor of a carpark in Winchester. Whilst driving back and forwards to France. Smuggled it in my pocket. It flew away. They all do. If you are a pigeon and that is no big deal to you, I can say the alphabet backwards.

To be fair 'amazing' is in the eye of the beholder as one can only amaze with ones actions someone who is receptive to being amazed. Most of the time I am too busy living life to be amazed by it, or I'd probably get distracted and fall off. So its up to you to decide if I have amazed you my dear reader, future host, surfer, hangouts compadre or profile stalker extraordinaire....

Dont play with ouiji boards.

Don't touch things that are ticking and are not a clock.

Don't touch things that are a clock, and are not ticking.

Don't date sisters, but if this cannot be avoided, at least don't date sisters at the same time. (not personal experience, but a good friend of mines)

Don't lick jellyfish. (sadly I must admit to this being personal experience)

What I Can Share with Hosts

Whenever I travel to someone I always like to bring a gift that will stay in their heart- although not yet a pacemaker which would make that literal.

I try my best to cook well and would love to cook with you.

If I'm driving my car or motorbike, then I can of course take you somewhere if you need some transport. We can even do a road trip together! I've done random travel with couchsurfers across all Europe, from Buying a car in Switzerland to a random expedition to a polish music festival.
