About Me

Preparing to travel form BA Argentina to Alaska as part of 34south|61north

My Background
As a London based artist I create painting, print, collage and installation work as a result of experiencing different environments. My practice surrounds a fascination with observing new things and meeting new people. 34South|61North will allow me to work out of the confines of my normal studio environment and social group. In doing this I will meet different people and work in new places, providing me the opportunity to work with fresh insights during the project.

The Proposal
I am an anthropological artist, so, my ideas and inspiration come from an observation of people and cultures and how I am perceived and affected by them. During this ongoing work I will travel from Chile to Alaska.
I am interested in discovering how artists practice in different places and how the individual cultures, climates, religions and economies affect the arts and what standing they have in societies.
The project will see me push the limits of my creativity and resourcefulness with regards to making art in new places and with limited means. This is an interactive project where I will work with and be assisted by people who wish to collaborate and assist as part of 34South|61North.
If you are interested in becoming part of 34South|61North please read the Open Call and get in touch.

The Outcome
This project will be documented digitally on my website and the progress will be blogged.
I will compliment this with physical exhibitions of the works made in venues throughout the continents.
The aim of this is for artists to share what is made and learnt throughout the trip online and physically. This will enable better networking for artists in the Americas and internationally. At the same time there will be an online insight into my day to day art, existance and travel in the Americas.

This is not my philosophy, but I like it:

In the beginning, before any gesture, all initiative and every
deliberate desire to travel, the body works in the manner of the
metals under the action of the sun. Perceiving the evidence of the
elements the body moves, expands, extends, streches and modifies its
volume. All this genealogy get lost in tepid waters of an amniotic
fluid, a stellar primitive shower where starts twinkle which later
manufactures maps in the sky, then shinning topographies which emerges
and indicates the pastor’s Star - my dad was the first one to teach me
- between the various constellations. The desire to travel has a
confused origin in this lustral tepid water, it strangely feeds of
this metaphysics surface and germinal ontology. Nobody becomes
unrepentant nomad unless instructed in the flesh, by hours of the
maternal belly rounded like a globe, a map of the world. The rest is
already a written parchment.

Why I'm on Couchsurfing

I've been traveling the Americas for two years now and getting ready for the last few months before heading back to London.

Thanks to all the great people who have been part of this journey! Next stop Caracas!

I was introduced to couch surfing by an American girl and Malaysian man in Penang, Malaysia. That was in 2009 and since then I have had many wonderful experiences.

One Amazing Thing I've Done

Getting to remote Cambodia and seeing waterfalls, backpacking with out the masses.
Island hopping through southern Japan, constantly being spoiled by local residents. Then staying at an amazing surfers house in Okinawa and watching the sunset over the harbour every night with cold beer and edamame.
Camping in the Northland of New Zealand truly feeling like I was at the edge of the world.

Teach, Learn, Share

Studio Share/lend
If you have a studio or suitable spare space anywhere in the Americas and are willing to let me use it for a couple of days to a couple of months please get in touch. Follow facebook and www.camillabrendon.com to see my progress reports and where I have got to in the trip.
So far approximate dates are:
March Chile-Santiago-Valparaiso-Argentina-Córdoba-La Cuna April-Buenos Aires

I am looking to collaborate with artists who are interested in any of the below points:
-how professional practice and the motives behind it vary between places and cultures.
-who consider culture, religion and geographical location as integral topics in their practice -
who are interested in completing a section of the travel with me.

Things to Consider:
-Can you work flexibly and with new people?
-Are you happy to exhibit and maybe travel with work created.
-Would you like to feature in the blog, facebook page and 34South61North section of Camilla Brendon's artist website?

People who can help introduce 34South61North to galleries, spaces and places where work can be exhibited as the project travels through the continents.
Documenting the work online with image and text will keep the wider audience constantly up to date with the developments of the piece.
To supplement this and give the project its physical element I am looking for places to show the work created.
If you can help by providing or putting me in touch with galleries, public spaces, bars or other locations where an art show could be held please get in touch.

People who can help promote and spread awareness of 34South61North
I hope for as many people as possible to be aware of the project and share the findings and art that is made. This is with the hope that artists will create links and continue exchanges and collaborations into the future.
If you are a journalist, critic, blogger or can promote the project in any way please get in touch. I am happy to give interviews, talks and workshops throughout the project.
