About Me

Just your everyday 26 year-old Aussie bloke. Easy-going by nature, I enjoy meeting new people, socialising, having in-depth conversations about things, partying, and swilling beer! Moved back to my home town of Perth, Australia in early 2020 after an extended period in Southern Taiwan, and am looking forward to hosting the occasional international traveller from ~October onwards!

Other things about me that may be of interest:

- I like literature, politics, music, karaoke, movies and (suspend your disbelief) travelling;
- I enjoy fitness, sport, hiking, the outdoors etc;
- I lean to the left;
- I'm an atheist;
- I'm vegetarian;
- (If it's helpful for messaging purposes or of interest) my Facebook profile: https://www.facebook.com/charles.owers

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

For a number of reasons, because:
- I've had great experiences with Couchsurfing in the past (have previously enjoyed alternately running what was effectively an unofficial hostel in Perth's city centre when I rented a 4bd house by myself, and later being the main organiser of CS meetups in Kaohsiung, Taiwan between Mar 2019-Mar 2020);
- I enjoy meeting new people and experiencing new things;
- I enjoy having good conversations, and because;
- I think the world is made a generally happier, healthier, more tolerant place when people are able to interact more with one another and share things (whether it's space in their homes, stories, wisdom, etc etc) with each other. There could be a whole lot less selfishness, parochialism and materialism in the world.

Music, Movies, and Books

Constantly listen to music, mostly rock, and sort of define myself by my tastes. Favourite genres/sub-genres would include alternative rock, Britpop, progressive rock, and pyschedelic rock. Favourite artists include Oasis, The Smiths, Morrissey, The Beatles, Electric Light Orchestra, Queen, Muse, Dire Straits, and Frank Turner.

Re books, I particularly love classic works of literature, informational non-fiction works relating to history and economics, and historical fiction. Am also an avid subscriber to The Economist and Foreign Policy magazines, and a frequent listener to the Rubin Report podcast.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

(Not really an achievement, or something that I really consider to have been beneficial to me, but in my otherwise unremarkable existence) I've read James Joyce's Ulysses, in its entirety. I utterly wasted hundreds of hours of my life reading the $%^!@#* thing if I can't at least tell people I've read it.

In terms of something actually amazing that I've done, diving to 30m to swim with thresher sharks possibly qualifies?

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm absolutely always open to good conversations about stuff. Would probably have the most to contribute on topics relating to, in no particular order, history, literature from the English-speaking world, international affairs, Australia, and rock music.

Guess I could teach people how to do handstands, juggle, or do a Rubik's cube? Probably the only remotely cool skills I have. All, clearly, a whole lot easier to master than most people realise.

Countries I’ve Visited

China, Japan, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Viet Nam

Countries I’ve Lived In
