About Me

I am a traveler. I don't travel light, but the difference between "traveling" and "not traveling" is pretty slim for me. I like having a home base, but you won't necessarily find me there very often. Travel is how I deal with an unfair world.

Speaking of unfair, right now I have a job that I can do from anywhere, and its mission is awesome! I'm the lead developer for Check it out, ask me if you have questions. It could do a lot for the idealists of the world. It doesn't pay much, but it provides me the opportunity to live in Finland for a couple months. I've been caring for alpacas and baby chicks before and after work. It's wonderful.

Missions are for battleships

The last four years have been spent traveling, more or less. I love music, I love exercise, I love reading, I like working with my hands, I like programming, I am a skeptic, and I like trees and cats.

Don't be a dick.

Strive for perfection.

Focus on the present, because it's the only thing that's real.

It's not the what, it's the how.

The universe has no meaning. Life has no meaning - except the meaning YOU put into it.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I began by hosting guests in San Francisco, and the experience changed my life. Since then, I have done a lot of surfing in northern and eastern Europe.

At the same time, I like to talk to members and staff about CS principles, about the website, and about the magic that happens in this community.

Summers 2008--2009: Hosting in San Francisco. Sometimes it felt like we ran a hostel, which was awesome. :)

Summers since then: surfing various parts of the world, including lots of last-minute requests because my bicycle trip is rather spontaneous. Sorry about that.

Today, I am interested in my new hiking boots, yoga and fitness, bicycles, and heavy metal music. Tomorrow, I might be interested in computer games, or soccer, or rock climbing. The next day, perhaps I will be interested in writing, and petting cats, and climbing trees. Or... programming, backpacking, piano, singing, teaching, learning, jogging, sitting, and, usually, coffee.

Music, Movies, and Books

Metal. Jazz. (Metal-jazz?). Swing. Thrash, groove, melodic, uptempo, that kinda thing.

I like movies, but I only watch them in an opportunistic kind of way -- I don't really keep track of them. I kinda wish I did, because so many movies have truly been inspiring!

I used to read a lot of sci-fi. I've read some non-fiction that was nice, and a bit of literature. I do like Hemingway, Michener, and John McPhee. I'd love to spend more time with books, but right now I need to experience the world first-hand.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I saw the midnight sun from the tippy-top of Sweden!

Teach, Learn, Share

Programming, physics, math! I love to talk about these things.

I can fix most bikes these days...

I can explain why some people like scream or growl vocals in death metal.

I know a thing or two about camping and dealing with bad weather.

I want to learn more about nutrition, about life philosophies, and darn it I really want to learn to fly helicopters.

Countries I’ve Visited
