About Me

Wow I can't believe two things; That I have been hosting couchsurfers for 11 years; and that Covid could so completely obliterate the backpacker traveller community from New Zealand.

Are there any Couchsurfers still out there!?!?!?!?!

My life has changed a lot from my profile below, but given that I don't think anyone is on here anymore I'm hardly about to change it! (go on - prove me wrong and send me a message... :-)

I also live in St Arnaud now - just in case you wanted to stay.

Keep well and live happy! Chris

CURRENT MISSION

To give the adventurous traveller the opportunity to see the authentic outdoors New Zealand

ABOUT ME

I spent a few years travelling, then set up a business in Chch. I have recently shifted myself and family to the small mountain village of St Arnaud. My two passions in life are exploring and creating. I love being in the hills, climbing, skiing, walking, biking or whatever. I also love making things. The pursuit of money is a prophecy that is lost on me. I live my dream as best I can.

PHILOSOPHY

Never stand idle. Life is short and every day needs to be used to it's best advantage. Know your own reasons for your actions. Make deliberate decisions and don't fall for someone elses philosophy. There is a whole world to be seen beyond the neighbourhood. Pay attention to the details. Don't watch TV. Tomorrow might be too late, live in the present moment.
Tread lightly on the earth and be aware of everything you consume.
A couchsurfer once said to me that CS is the opposite of Facebook, whereby it takes digital people and makes them real, instead of taking real people and making them digital. I really liked it! So I'm using it here. It actually does ring true when someone walks in the door.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

This is my first proper update after three years of couchsurfing! I have met so many amazing people through CS and I thoroughly enjoy opening my doors to travellers.

Interests

skiing, climbing, mountaineering, mountain biking, trekking, kayaking, building things, growing plants, figuring out ways to make the world better. Cycle touring is something I really enjoy and recently rode the Great Divide Route through the Rockies in Canada and USA.

Music, Movies, and Books

I mostly read adventure stories, personal enlightenment books, alternative knowledge and technical books. I like all types of music, metal, rap, ambient and some popular. Reggae is the favourite though:-)
To be more specific, Shantaram, The Green, Searching for Sugarman, Tribal Seeds, Born to Run, Everything you know is wrong, Alborosie, Tipping Point.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Two weeks trekking and mountaineering in Mongolia.
A few years ago I had the most other-worldly and timeless experience alone in the mountains in remote Fiordland. It is still the most amazing day of my life and impossible to articulate with words.
Fiordland is Mecca.

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach: I can juggle! or you can make something in my workshop. A lot of people seem to really enjoy learning how to weld or use a chainsaw. I actually love showing people these things.
Learn: I have a guitar and need some lessons!
Share: An experience in the mountains
