About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I'm working on a book about the economy of Mozambique

ABOUT ME

I now live in Hong Kong, before that London, before that Seattle. I also lived in a lorry in the French Alps for a while.

PHILOSOPHY

Put yourself in other peoples shoes when you can, the world will make more sense.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I have been participating in the spirit of CS all my life. My parents were great ones for opening up their home to people. We swapped homes with families when I was a kid and had a constant stream of exchange students to stay. Then after college in America I moved to London and began my own world of helping people out and putting people up. When you live in expensive and impersonal places like London and Hong Kong it's great to have people stay if you have the space.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I lived in a fun, central part of London for 13 years so I had a revolving door of guests, it was great. Apart form having people stay, I also enjoy picking up hitch-hikers and most enjoy random acts of kindness (though these days just holding a door open for someone gets a pretty shocked response).
Worst couch experience- I thought that one friend of a friend of a friend was staying for a couple of nights, three people showed up and stayed for 2 months (the first week was OK, it was my fault for being too English and not saying anything).

Best couch experience- probably still to come, but there have many great ones to date.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

That's tough, I've been a photographer for 20 years, sometimes in the front row seats of history. So seeing interesting things is often literally my job.

The book I'm currently working on is the most complex thing I've ever worked on and is teaching me a lot, so amazing new experiences are coming all the time.

Oooh! I've got it, I got married, that is amazingly big.
