Overview
About Me
CURRENT MISSION
Learn from the people of the world by experiencing as many world cultures as possible
ABOUT ME
We are a long-time couple who have pursued travel as our major avocation. Alice was a management consultant in education for 30 years, Doug was an economic consultant in housing for 20 years. Nowadays, we are giving back to the community with several cultural, educational, and health-related NGOs.
PHILOSOPHY
Locally, we seek to learn ever more and to help our community. In travel, we try to follow the cultural golden rule: to understand other cultures and help them understand ours.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
We have been active in Servas (a similar group, often considered the grand-daddy of Couchsurfer, with a strong focus on peace-building), as hosts and travelers, for 30 years. In 2009, we joined CS and have found that both hosting and traveling with this group has been a life enriching experience as well.
We don't survey public trips of others, so if you want to stay with us you will need to write to us directly.
Because of very busy schedules, we usually prefer to limit visits to us to two nights, yet also feel that one night visits are too short to foster real understandings.
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
It renews our faith in humanity that people are willing to open their homes and hearts to strangers.
Interests
Culture in every sense of the word: attitudes, values, presumptions, hopes, ways of daily life, educational systems, and medical care. Also all of man-made creations: architecture, art, theater, music, and museums.

Music, Movies, and Books
Meaningful/insightful movies, often foreign. Mostly classical music and folk, but really open to all forms. Well-written books on most anything.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Exploring 160+ countries, and making at least that number of friends.
Teach, Learn, Share
We love to share our stories from fifty years of travel, and to hear yours. We are eager to discuss how things work (or don't!) in our country and learn about systems in your country. Someone recently described us as his favorite "Citizen Diplomats," which is exactly how we want to be known.
