About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Meeting people drawn to the fine arts, languages or both. In your request, please state what we have in common. After almost a decade in Chicago, we relocated to Asia in 2019, and are eager to explore it more.

ABOUT ME

I love cultures, languages and music. My work involves all three. Nature has its place, but urban landscapes are better. English and German are my best languages, but I can function in French and Italian, and I fare moderately well in several others.

My husband Romeo is a born-and-raised Chicagoan who works in both graphic design and trapeze.

PHILOSOPHY

I strive to be helpful, whether in a small way or a big way. I know that good deeds are contagious.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Romeo and I hosted most of the time in Chicago, but occasionally showed people around. Since relocating to Asia, hosting is more difficult as local apartments are generally small, but showing people around remains a good option.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Romeo and I have lots of experience as hosts in Chicago and some here in Hong Kong. We also surfed once in Germany and I surfed twice in the USA and once in Canada. We prefer to host, not to be hosted. We have hosted surfers from:

Music, Movies, and Books

Fiction is great, but I am also apt to peruse dictionaries and reference works. I have read books by K. Abe, Achebe, Akutagawa, J. Baldwin, Banville, Beckett, Bellow, J. Berger, Böll, Borges, Bradbury, Bulgakov, Burgess, Calvino, Camus, Cervantes, Coetzee, Conrad, Dagerman, Dazai, DeLillo, Diop, Döblin, Dostoyevsky, Endō, Fallada, Faulkner, Flaubert, Forster, Galgut, García Márquez, Goethe, Grass, Greene, Gurnah, Han Kang, Handke, Hawthorne, Hemingway, Hesse, Houellebecq, Hrabal, Huxley, Ishiguro, Joyce, Kadare, Kafka, Kawabata, Kiš, Kundera, Leung Ping-kwan, Lispector, Mann, C. McCarthy, Mishima, Mo Yan, Modiano, T. Morrison, Natsume, Pamuk, Proust, Pynchon, Sade, F. Sagan, Saramago, Sartre, G. Saunders, Sebald, Sholokhov, Solzhenitsyn, Steinbeck, Swift, Tanizaki, Tóibín, Tokarczuk, Tomasi di Lampedusa, Vonnegut, B. Washington, Whitehead, Wilde, Woolf, Wu Ming-Yi, Yan Lianke, Yu Hua, Zamyatin, Zola, and Zweig recently.

Beloved filmmakers include Akerman, Bergman, Bertolucci, Bresson, Ceylan, Costa, Diaz, Fassbinder, Godard, Greenaway, Haneke, Hong, Hou, Jarman, Jia, Kiarostami, Kieślowski, Kore-eda, Lee Chang-dong, Loach, Ozon, Pasolini, Resnais, Reygadas, Rivette, Tarkovsky, Tarr, von Trier, Truffaut, Tsai, Varda, Weerasethakul, and Yang.

I listen mostly to classical music from the past and from today, but sometimes pop music is perfect. Tindersticks is my favourite band.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Amazing? I am unsure. For me, what is most amazing is often what is simplest.

Teach, Learn, Share

I am good at absorbing languages, I have been told, and am able and willing to offer insight into the languages that I speak to varying degrees of fluency.

Also, with my background in musicology, I could gladly impart an appreciation for classical music.

Romeo could teach trapeze or coding skills.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Our surfers have given us compliments on our generosity, our knowledge of Chicago and Hong Kong (or wherever we may be!) and, of course, the comfort of our apartment.
