About Me

I am currently living in London but I grew up in Melbourne and my family are originally from Turkey. I left Melbourne when I was about 18, and went to Oxford to study, then moved to London to continue studying. At the moment I work for Amnesty International in London.

I joined Couchsurfing before a big trip to the Caribbean/South America in 2012/13. I did a legal internship with a human rights NGO in Kingston Jamaica, where I lived for three months. After 2 months of travelling, in Cuba and Colombia, I lived in Buenos Aires for a while (trying) to learn Spanish.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I can't host at the moment but am happy to hang out. If you're visiting London and think we'll get along, feel free to get in touch. Please, if you do contact me, tell me a bit about why you think we'll get along though! I'm only really available at the weekend, but always have fun things planned like...last weekend I went to a live hip hop gig and a street carnival! Would be great to share such things with Couchsurfers.

Most of my friends in Kingston Jamaica were either on Couchsurfing or friends of Couchsurfers - without Couchsurfing, it would have been a very lonely three months! I hung out with some incredible Couchsurfers in Cuba, whose generosity and kindness really shaped my experience of the island. I've surfed in Argentina and Italy. Overall, my experience of Couchsurfing have been nothing but wonderful!

Going to concerts/clubs to dance to the music listed below, cycling in good weather, walking in the countryside, fruit and vegetable markets, parks...I like organising going out with my friends, because I have pretty specific ideas of what I like to dance to!

I'm also really interested in politics, economics, anthropology and law and like talking/arguing about these things. Especially if it's about Turkey and the Middle East, religion, prison law and human rights...

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies...anything by Stanley Kubrick, Michael Haneke, Woody Allen or Lars von Trier, or starring Channing Tatum. Or hip-hop dance movies e.g. Step Up 2 the Streets! With a title like that...I also really love TV, especially binge watching box sets of series like The Sopranos, Arrested Development, The Wire, Seinfeld, Oz, 30 Rock, Community, Chapelle's Show, Weeds and (unfortunately) many more.

Music...mainly hip hop, rnb, reggae, dancehall...every mix by the Heatwave ever...e.g. https://soundcloud.com/theheatwave/last-party-on-earth
and Middle Eastern music/rap or stuff that sounds anything like this Soulico song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l00iSHXktJM or this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8pGNRc8tCYg

Books...at the moment I'm reading Colm Toibin, Amin Maalouf, Isabel Allende, Naomis Wolf and Klein, Nazim Hikmet and Edward Said...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

A girl balancing on her head, on an enormous wall of speakers, in Kingston in order to win a dancehall dance competition. Jamaica, no problem!

Teach, Learn, Share

I am looking to learn how to DJ! I have done so a bit, but don't really know how. I also want to improve my Spanish, learn Arabic, and could probably teach a bit of English and Turkish.

Countries I’ve Visited

Argentina, Croatia, Cuba, Fiji, France, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Lebanon, New Caledonia, Serbia, Spain, Turkey

Countries I’ve Lived In

Argentina, Australia, Jamaica, Turkey, United Kingdom
