Since teachers like you are just staying for a short term, things here will be very changeable for the students as well.
While ourselves are not here, teachers who come have to organize a lot by their own. If no teacher has been here for a certain time, the groups of children that have already studied for a while have to be brought together again by the newly arrived teacher.
What to do at „Escolinha Itacoatiara“
Till now we have been teaching very basic things. For example how to present to each other, ask for the name and nationality, ask for their age and the age of their brothers and sisters.
The children are of different ages, but in general their knowledge of English and math is unbelievably limited.
The children are sometimes quite motivated while repeating what was just said before, and some of them have heard the chapters quite often, but they are not able to use or change the phrases they learned.
There are also 3 textbooks with some exercises, you can make copies and do the exercises with them.
If a teacher doesn't speak Portuguese, it is no problem at all, perhaps it will even help, and for sure he or she will learn some Brazilian Portuguese.
In the afternoon we made an „open-workshop“. More and younger children came, some of them only sometimes, others quite regularly. The children are allowed to use the computer to study book2 by their own. Some of the young children love copying the map of Brazil and the Word map, they have done it quite often, but some are still asking to do it again and we didn't stop them. Once we played with dices to learn about probability, another day we let eggs float in salt water. Sometimes at the end we let them watch BBC documentaries in English on the computer, but to play computer games is not allowed.
So at lesson in the afternoon (if needed the time can be changed by the teacher to any other time) the children sometimes have been doing different things at the same time in small groups, some are copying maps, some listening to book2, some play cardgames and some show the homework they have to do and want some help. What they like most is painting.
Until now everybody has been behaving surprisingly good. If there are some children just coming and going or hanging around at the window, they understand when the teacher wants to close the doors or windows to have less confusion. The highest amount of visitors was 16 persons when Saskia was giving painting lessons at her second day.
If there is something else you know and want to teach, like painting, singing, playing an instrument or whatever, feel free to do it. If possible, try to teach some English words while teaching other things. The point is to motivate the children or to help them to find their talents.

How to go to the interior (=inland, jungle) and what it will cost !
The easiest way for you to go to the interior is to pay transport for somebody to come with you. Donna Maria, Poro and most of their children like to have a short trip to the inland, it´s where they grew up and lived many years. But often the children have school, and the price for the boat is for local people quite high, 30
Reais each person each way.
If you want to go to the interior ( the inland or jungle ) you can visit Poros brother Pedro, he is living at the Rio Tucunare. He has a nice house and working in a lot of different agricultal activities. Three boats, called recreio, with around 30 to 40 passengers are going three times a week from the harbor to Rio Arari/Tucunaré. Depending on the waterlevel, the boattrip will take you 6 to 9 hours. The boat will leave in the very morning and will bring you to a swimming supermarket (flutuante).
There you can be picked up by Pedro with his smaller boat, leave the big River Arari and enter in the Rio Tucunaré, it will take an hour to arrive at Pedros house. If you dont want to get up early you can sleep on the boat the night before its leaving.
So if you want to take somebody from my family to the interior, you have to pay their transport and their food!!!
Transport each person each way is 30 Reais.
Food for one week would be a big white bag more than half full of rice, beans, spaghetti, salt, suggar, oil (2 liter), milkpowder. It will cost you 100 Reais minimum, but will be enough to feed you, the people from the family that are coming with you and Pedros family at the Tucunare.
You also should take a canister of more or less 15 liters of gasolina (50 Reais) with you, so Pedro can pick you up and you have petrol to do little trips on the small rivers. There are little shops in the Inland, but everything is more expensive.
Before you leave Donna Maria has to send a message via radio to Pedro, so he can pick you up, you have to pay two motortaxis so she can send somebody to the radio-station.
You also have to pay several motortaxis so all of you can get to the harbor and back.
A trip with two persons from Donna Marias family and you will cost around or more than 400 Reais. It doesnt matter if you stay just four days or three weeks, more or less same price, so stay as long as possible!
Try to share the costs and go together with an other volunteer.
You can also try to go to the interior totally by your own, especially when you are Brasilian, but better pay all expenses and go with Donna Maria. Compared to a professional jungle-trip in Manaus you will have your own personal Amazonas experience and it will be very nice for sure.
