About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Leveling up. Or, at the very least, stay in the game!

ABOUT ME

I'm just this guy, you know? Oh, and I like games. I mean; I really like games. I've been making them now for longer than I haven't. Admittedly, lecturing and speaking on game design is what puts food on the table.

I do what I'm passionate about, and who could ask for more.

Never saw myself becoming a teacher but I ended up loving it, actually. Weird how that can happen. In my own education I was often more interested in the people around me than the actual studying.

In my work, I try at every turn to change attitudes about gaming and hope to in some little way hack away at the stigma related to video games.

My personal goal is to help introduce game mechanics in other areas of life, like learning/training/rehabilitation/coping. And to have fun!

Spare time is divided between my own projects and relaxing. And, man, can I relax when I first get into it.

Been very lucky in life. Fulfilling work. Get to travel some. Met a bunch of great people. Seen some come, some go. I'm quite content being here now, floating in space.

Buy the ticket -> Take the ride, I guess. No refunds.

PHILOSOPHY

"It'll be fine." :)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Hosting. Leveling down my creep-o-meter enough so that one day I can myself grab a couch when in a bind. But if anyone needs a place to stay for a while, or just wants to hang out, you're welcome.

Oh, and throw some ingredients my way and I'll concoct us a meal :)

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Sofa so good :P Just wrapped up first couple of hosting stints and it's been, all in all, an enjoyable experience!

Personally,I've moved around a lot and travelled a bunch to boot. I'm fairly easy-going and get along with most people, which helps when you're on the road.

Interests

Looking at stuff, thinking about stuff, talking about stuff. I do like to cook. Food alchemy, a glass of wine, music and friends and I'm at my happiest :)

I'm always open to new experiences, and deceptively agile! I like to get outdoors. Back-packing, camping, hiking, walks or just a casual stroll around town is a great way to clear your head and get away from it all for the afternoon. Or month. Also love to nerd out on games and sci-fi.

Music, Movies, and Books

Lists of stuff that I can pretty much enjoy any time :)

Playing with: Any Lucasarts, Rockstar or Remedy game, Fallout, Skyrim, RPG's. My cat. You've stopped reading, haven't you?

Watching: Dark City, Magnolia, Fight Club, Alien, Idiocracy, Before/After Sunset/before midnight, anything by the Coens or Disney. Charlie Brooker. Star Trek/Wars (why not both?). Nerdy stuff.

Music: Glitch-step, Radiohead, Grunge, Electronica, game music, classical, Motown. Music was really important to me growing up. I still do listen and play but, admittedly, I've a more casual approach to it these days.

Reading: Anything Philip K. Dick or other good sci-fi, Hunter S. Thompson, Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, Tolkien, stuff about anthropology/architecture/philosophy/mythology. Sometimes I even go to the library! :o

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Being born was pretty nice. Seeing the inside of the Square Enix boardroom was cool. Camping out at Stonehenge was trippy. Getting to meet a lot of my heroes in my time here has been great. It's basically been a whole lot of awesome.

Of course, sometimes we all go through some dark stuff. But at the end of the day, a pretty good run so far!

Teach, Learn, Share

Storytelling, writing, game design, software development, public speaking, teaching, languages, start-ups, IT, music.

I try to be a good listener in general, as well. Have to say, sometimes I think I'm more apt at dispensing advice than taking it myself. But I am looking to better myself.
