If you're coming to China, get Wechat app, the only messenger here. And vpn(better few apps)! Because Watsapp, telegram, instagram, google, YouTube and couchsurfing are blocked here, so make sure you arrange in advance. In Shanghai people do speak some English (rarely) but here are a lot of foreigners. Other cities - not so much English speaking, even Beijing. There is also Translator or Microsoft translator app that can translate from a photo, might be useful for you.
