About Me

If you just want to read one paragraph in my profile, read the one just below this one.

First of all: I have written some stuff in my profile about me and the way I think. I do understand that, as a host, you want to know who it is that is coming to stay at your place overnight. If you want to, you can read my whole profile, and you might get a sense of who I am.
On the other hand, living in the 21st century with the availability of social media, it is easy to get a LOT of information about a person before ever having met them. You can know a person before you get to know them. I do sometimes like to not know too much about a person, because if you do know too much, you start off with a preconceived notion based on what a person publishes online, and the element of surprise and not knowing to me is sometimes interesting. So you can decide for yourself if you want to keep on reading everything that I wrote after this paragraph. The important stuff for hosts: I am organized, I like to help with the dishes and stuff (I usually ask for instructions how and what to do) and I like to hang out with you if you have time, and if not, I am also fine with that.
What follows now is stuff about myself that is not necessary for you to know as a host, but you can read it if you want.

I honestly don't like traveling. I like experiencing culture, I like to spend time in different places, but I prefer to be a person temporarily living in a new place rather than a tourist. I don't enjoy the speed of life that comes with being a tourist. I don't want my travelling experiences to be exhausting, or at least not more exhausting than living a normal life at home would be. When traveling, I want to keep the normal, healthy day to day pace that the people have that live in the place where I am traveling to.

Even though my passport says that I am German, I consider myself to be an inhabitant of earth. I don't say that because I have traveled a lot, I haven't, but because I think too strong identities toward the country (or region) you were born in is one of the main sources of racism (and of war). This is not to disrespect independence movements, I do see their point and I can understand that many people are unhappy with the government their are living in, and that different governments suit different cultures better than others (even though, some governments are in my eyes just bad). This is also not to disrespect the influence of culture, I understand that the environment you grew up in shapes the way you think about life and the world. That in fact is the interesting part about traveling. I just think the fact that I grew up on this planet has a way bigger influence on my life than the fact that I grew up in Germany.

One thing I don't like is when people spend too much time on their phone when they are with you. It's not possible to have a conversation. Checking your phone every now and then is ok, but I think it's impossible to have a normal conversation when people don't give each other their undivided attention.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

The thing I like most about Couchsurfing is that it gives you the ability to meet local people living in the area you are traveling in. It turns you into a temporary local, which has the effect of giving you a realistic picture what life in these places might look like on a day to day basis.
